Eighteen is the pass mark everyone quotes. Here is what each of the eight kootas checks, why Nadi and Bhakoot carry so much weight, and when a low score is not the end of the story.
When two families exchange kundlis, the first number anyone asks for is the guna score out of 36. It is worth knowing what that number is made of.
Where the 36 comes from
Ashtakoot means "eight groups". Each compares the Moon sign and nakshatra of the two people, and each has a maximum score:

The weights rise as you go down. Bhakoot and Nadi together are 15 of the 36 points, which is why a zero in either gets so much attention.
The pass mark
- Below 18 — traditionally not recommended without further analysis.
- 18–24 — acceptable.
- 25–32 — very good.
- Above 32 — excellent, and rare.
When a dosha is cancelled
A zero in Nadi or Bhakoot is called a dosha, but classical texts list conditions that cancel it. Common examples: the Moon signs (or their lords) are the same or friendly; the nakshatras are the same but the signs differ. Our calculator flags the cancellations it can check mechanically.
What Guna Milan does not check
The score only compares two Moons. It says nothing about:
- Manglik dosha — Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house.
- The 7th house and its lord in each chart.
- The dasha each person will be running after marriage.
- Longevity, children and career, which need the full charts.
That is why a 28/36 match can still get a cautious reply from a family astrologer, and a 16/36 match can go ahead happily.
A worked example
Take a bride whose Moon is in Rohini (Vrishabha). Here is how two different grooms score with our Kundli Milan tool:

The Shravana groom does better on five of the eight kootas, yet scores nine points less. Vrishabha and Makara are 5th and 9th from each other, which gives Bhakoot 0, and Rohini and Shravana share the same antya nadi, which gives Nadi 0. Those two kootas alone decide the result.
Nadi dosha in more detail
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis — adi (vata), madhya (pitta) and antya (kapha). When both partners share the same nadi, Nadi scores 0 and the match has Nadi dosha, traditionally linked to health and children.
The classical texts themselves list exceptions: the same nakshatra but different signs, the same sign but different nakshatras, or different padas of the same nakshatra in some traditions. A Nadi dosha nivaran pooja or Mahamrityunjaya jaap is the usual remedy when no exception applies.
Common questions
Is 18 really the pass mark? It is the traditional minimum. Many astrologers look for 18 plus no uncancelled Nadi or Bhakoot dosha, and a sound 7th house in both charts.
Can a love marriage skip guna milan? Many couples do. If families want the match checked, the score is one input; the full charts say more.
Does the South Indian system use the same 36 points? South India commonly uses the Dashakoota (ten poruthams) system, which overlaps with Ashtakoot but scores differently.
