What is a nakshatra?
One of the 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac, each 13°20′ wide and split into four padas of 3°20′. Your janma nakshatra is the one the Moon was in when you were born.
Why does the birth time matter for the nakshatra?
The Moon moves through a whole nakshatra in about a day, and through a pada in about six hours. Near a boundary, a few hours can change the answer; the result warns you when that is the case.
How are baby names chosen from the nakshatra?
Each pada has a traditional starting syllable (for example Chu, Che, Cho, La for the four padas of Ashwini). Many families pick a name that begins with the syllable of the child’s birth pada.
