चंद्राष्टम — हर महीने के वो दो दिन जब संभलकर चलें

यह लेख अंग्रेज़ी में है।

Every month the Moon passes through the 8th sign from your own Moon sign for about two and a half days. What Chandrashtama is, how to find yours, and how seriously to take it.

Tamil and Malayalam panchangs print a small line every day: Chandrashtamam for such-and-such star. It is one of the most practical ideas in daily astrology, and one of the least known in the north.

What it is

The Moon moves through all twelve signs in about 27 days, spending roughly two and a quarter days in each.

Chandrashtama (Chandra + ashtama, "Moon in the eighth") is the period when the transiting Moon is in the 8th sign from your birth Moon sign. The 8th house is the house of obstacles, sudden events and hidden things; the Moon is the mind. So these are the days when the mind is said to be less steady.

South Indian panchangs list it by nakshatra instead: for each birth star, the 17th star counted from it is the Chandrashtama star. It works out to much the same stretch of days.

How to find the days

  1. Find your Moon sign. If you do not know it, the free nakshatra finder gives it from your birth date, time and place.
  2. Look up today's Moon sign in the panchang.
  3. When today's Moon sign matches your Chandrashtama sign in the table, those are your days.

Because the Moon returns every 27 days or so, Chandrashtama comes around once a month, and moves a day or two earlier each calendar month.

What people traditionally avoid

  • Starting something important: a new job, a big purchase, signing a contract.
  • Travel that can be postponed.
  • Arguments and hard conversations — the mind is said to be quicker to react.
  • Surgery that is not urgent.

How seriously to take it

Chandrashtama is a caution, not a curse. It affects the whole population with the same Moon sign at once — about one person in twelve — so it cannot mean that anything bad will happen to all of them.

Think of it like a weather forecast of mood. If you have a choice of dates, it makes sense to avoid these two days for something important. If you do not, go ahead calmly. Many astrologers also say that a strong Moon in the birth chart, or a favourable dasha, makes Chandrashtama barely noticeable.

Simple remedies

  • Begin the day with a few minutes of quiet or meditation.
  • Recite Om Som Somaya Namah or the Chandra mantra.
  • Wear white, drink enough water, and sleep on time.
  • Offer water or milk to a Shivling on Monday if Chandrashtama falls then.

Common questions

Is Chandrashtama the same as the 8th house in my chart? No. It is about the moving Moon passing through the 8th from your birth Moon. It says nothing about your birth chart's 8th house.

Does it matter for muhurat? Yes — muhurat practice checks Chandra bala, the Moon's strength from the person's Moon sign, and the 8th is one of the positions avoided.

Your daily Rashifal already takes the Moon's position from your sign into account.
