Choosing a gemstone? Start with your Lagna, not your zodiac sign
The same Pukhraj can help one person and do nothing for another. How astrologers actually choose a ratna, what carat and ratti mean, and why Neelam gets a trial run.
"I'm a Sagittarius, so I should wear Pukhraj." It is the most common sentence astrologers hear about gemstones — and it skips the most important step.
Why the Lagna comes first
A gemstone strengthens a planet. Whether that is good for you depends on which houses the planet rules in your chart, and that is decided by your Lagna (ascendant) — which needs your birth time.
The common starting point is three stones:
- Life stone — for the lord of the 1st house (Lagna lord): health, confidence, direction.
- Punya stone — for the lord of the 5th: intelligence, children, past merit.
- Bhagya stone — for the lord of the 9th: luck, blessings, higher learning.
These three lords are always friendly to the chart. Stones for the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses are usually avoided, because strengthening them can strengthen problems too.

Carat and ratti
Gems are sold by carat (0.2 g). Many families still speak in ratti; one ratti is roughly 0.91 carat, so a 5.25-carat stone is about 5.75 ratti. A common rule of thumb is one ratti for every 10–12 kg of body weight, but your astrologer may advise otherwise.
Neelam gets a trial
Blue sapphire is said to act fast, for better or worse. The tradition is to keep it under your pillow or wear it loosely for a few days first and watch sleep, mood and events. Hessonite and cat's eye are treated with similar care.
Before you buy
- Ask for the lab certificate and check that the report number matches the stone.
- Ask whether the stone is natural and untreated (heat treatment is common and should be disclosed).
- Ask how it will be energised (pran-pratishtha) before you wear it.
Stones that are usually avoided together
The tradition groups the grahas into two camps — Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter on one side, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu on the other — and advises against combining stones of enemy planets. The most commonly cited pairs to avoid:
- Manik (ruby) with Neelam (blue sapphire) or with Heera (diamond).
- Moti (pearl) with Gomed or Lahsuniya.
- Pukhraj (yellow sapphire) with Heera or Panna (emerald).
The Navratna ring, which sets all nine together, is the exception: it is worn for balance rather than to strengthen any one planet.
Wearing it the first time
- Wash the ring in raw milk and Gangajal the morning you wear it.
- Light a diya and recite the planet's mantra 108 times.
- Wear it on the planet's day, in the first hours after sunrise, while the day's hora or the Moon is favourable.
Your astrologer may give you a specific muhurat. Once worn, keep it on; if you take it off for a long time, repeat the process.
Common questions
Can I wear a stone just because I like it? As jewellery, yes. As a jyotish remedy, it should be chosen from the chart. A stone for a planet that rules your 6th, 8th or 12th house can bring more of those houses' themes.
What if I don't know my birth time? Many astrologers then use the Moon sign as the reference, which is less precise. The Moon sign is fine for Rashifal, but for a costly stone it is worth rectifying the birth time first.
How long does a stone take to work? The tradition gives each stone a period to show its effect, usually from a few days to about a month. Neelam is said to act fastest.
