Venus is retrograde from 3 October to 14 November 2026, and Mercury joins it from 24 October. What vakri actually means, why Jyotish treats a retrograde planet as strong rather than weak, and what is sensible to postpone.
"Mercury retrograde" has become shorthand for anything going wrong with phones, flights and emails. The Indian tradition has a more interesting view of vakri (retrograde) planets — and a less frightening one.
The dates (sidereal, Lahiri)

For about three weeks, from late October to mid-November, both are retrograde in or near Tula (Libra) — Venus's own sign. Diwali (8 November) falls inside this window.
Looking further ahead, Mercury is retrograde again from about 10 February to 4 March 2027, 11 June to 5 July 2027, and 8 to 29 October 2027. Mars turns retrograde from 11 January to 2 April 2027.
What retrograde actually means
No planet ever moves backwards. Seen from the Earth, which is also moving, a planet appears to slow down, stop and reverse against the background stars for a while. Mercury does this three or four times a year, Venus about every nineteen months, and the outer planets once a year.
The Vedic view: strong, not weak
In Jyotish a vakri planet is closer to the Earth and brighter, and the classical texts give it extra cheshta bala — strength of motion. A retrograde planet is therefore considered powerful, not broken.
What changes is the style of its results. Astrologers often describe vakri planets as:
- Reviewing — matters of that planet come back for a second look.
- Delayed — things happen, but not on the first attempt.
- Internalised — the energy turns inward, towards reflection rather than action.
For Mercury, that is speech, trade, contracts, writing and technology. For Venus, it is relationships, art, luxury, vehicles and comfort.
What is sensible to postpone
Traditional muhurat practice avoids some beginnings when the relevant planet is retrograde:
- Venus retrograde: marriage muhurats are usually not fixed while Shukra is vakri or combust. Many astrologers also advise waiting on big luxury purchases and new romantic commitments.
- Mercury retrograde: signing important contracts, launching a product or starting a course are sometimes moved to after Budh turns direct.
Almost everything else — work, travel, festivals, puja — carries on. Diwali and Lakshmi Puja are fixed by the tithi and are not moved for retrogrades.
What is good during a retrograde
The "re-" words: revising, repairing, reconnecting, reconsidering. Retrograde periods are traditionally good for finishing old work, going back over accounts, re-reading contracts before signing them later, and reconnecting with old friends.
It depends on your chart
A retrograde planet in the sky matters most if:
- that planet is also retrograde in your birth chart,
- it rules your Lagna, 7th or 10th house, or
- you are running its dasha or antardasha.

Common questions
Should I buy a phone during Mercury retrograde? Nothing in the classical texts forbids it. If you are anxious about it, the day after Mercury turns direct is 15 November.
