If you were born in late April and have always read the Taurus column, there is a good chance your Vedic Rashifal is a different sign.

Two differences

1. Moon, not Sun. Western horoscopes use the Sun's sign. Vedic Rashifal uses the Moon's sign (Chandra rashi), because the Moon rules the mind and moves fast enough to show day-to-day change.

2. Sidereal, not tropical. Vedic astrology measures signs against the fixed stars. The difference today is about 24 degrees (the ayanamsa), so even your Sun sign is often one sign earlier in the Vedic system.

How gochar-based Rashifal is read

A Vedic Rashifal is built from gochar — where the planets are transiting today — counted from your Moon sign:

• If the Moon is transiting the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th sign from yours, the day is generally supportive.
• If it is in the 8th or 12th, the texts advise care.
• Slower planets set the tone for the week and month: Shani in the 3rd, 6th or 11th is favourable; Guru in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th brings growth.

That is exactly how our Rashifal is written: the positions are calculated every day from an ephemeris, and each line tells you which planet and which house it comes from.

Find your Moon sign in one minute

Your Moon sign depends on your birth date, time and place, because the Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days. There is no shortcut from the birth month alone.

If you do not know your birth time, the Moon sign is still right on most days — but if you were born on a day when the Moon changed sign, the time decides which of the two it is.

Why the Moon changes daily readings

The Moon covers a whole sign in about 54 hours, so a daily Rashifal changes meaningfully every two or three days. The slower planets set the backdrop:

• Jupiter stays about a year in a sign.
• Saturn stays about two and a half years.
• Rahu and Ketu stay about eighteen months.

A good Rashifal reads the fast Moon against this slower background.

Chandra bala and tara bala

Two daily checks in muhurat practice come straight from your Moon:

• Chandra bala — the day's Moon counted from your Moon sign. The 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are good; the 8th is the one most avoided (see Chandrashtama).
• Tara bala — the day's nakshatra counted from your birth nakshatra, in groups of nine.

Common questions

Why is my newspaper sign different? Newspapers use the Sun sign on the tropical zodiac. Your Vedic Moon sign can be any of the twelve.

Should I read the Lagna sign instead? Many astrologers read both. Lagna-based readings are more personal but need an accurate birth time.
