The diamond chart looks like a puzzle until you know one rule: the houses never move, the signs do. A short guide to reading your own chart.
The North Indian chart — the diamond inside a square — is the one most families in the north keep folded in a drawer. It looks cryptic, but it follows one simple rule.
The houses stay still
In the North Indian style, the twelve houses are fixed. The diamond at the top centre is always the 1st house (Lagna). From there, houses run anti-clockwise: the triangle to its upper left is the 2nd, the one below that the 3rd, the diamond on the left the 4th, and so on until the 12th sits to the upper right of the Lagna.
What changes from chart to chart is the number written in each house. That number is the sign (1 = Mesha/Aries, 2 = Vrishabha/Taurus … 12 = Meena/Pisces).
So if the top diamond shows 2, you have a Taurus Lagna. The next house anti-clockwise will show 3 (Gemini), and so on.
The four diamonds matter most
The four diamond-shaped houses — 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — are the kendras, the pillars of the chart:
- 1st — self, body, temperament
- 4th — home, mother, inner peace
- 7th — marriage and partnerships
- 10th — career and public life
Planets here have a strong say in life. Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, a bright Moon, Mercury) in kendras are generally a good sign.
Reading the planets
Planets are written as short names inside the houses: Su, Mo, Ma, Me, Ju, Ve, Sa, Ra, Ke — or सू, चं, मं, बु, गु, शु, श, रा, के in Hindi charts. A planet written with (R) is retrograde.
To read a placement, combine three things: which planet, which house and which sign. "Jupiter in the 7th in Sagittarius" means the planet of wisdom and growth, in the house of marriage, in its own sign — a classical support for a good spouse.
The Moon and your nakshatra
The Moon's sign is your rashi, used for Rashifal, Sade Sati and matching. The exact degree of the Moon gives your nakshatra, which sets your Vimshottari dasha — the planetary periods that time events in your life.

The same chart in both styles has exactly the same information. Once you can find the Lagna, you can read either.
A five-minute checklist
- Lagna — the number in the top diamond, and any planets in it.
- Moon — its sign is your rashi; its house shows where your mind is drawn.
- Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) — which planets sit in the four diamonds.
- Trikonas (1, 5, 9) — planets here bring fortune.
- Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) — note which planets are here and which houses they rule.
- Retrograde and combust planets — marked with (R) or (C) in many charts.
- Dasha — which planet's period you are in now.
Common questions
Why does my chart from another website look different? Usually a different ayanamsa or a birth time entered in the wrong time zone. Check that your birth time is in Indian Standard Time (or local time for births outside India).
