A kundli has three layers: signs (the rashis), planets (the grahas) and houses (the bhavas). The houses are where life happens. Each one covers a set of subjects, and the planets in it — and the planet that rules it — describe how those subjects go.

The twelve bhavas

7th	Kalatra	Marriage, spouse, partnerships, business
8th	Randhra / Ayu	Longevity, sudden events, inheritance, research, the hidden
9th	Dharma / Bhagya	Luck, father, teachers, religion, long journeys
10th	Karma	Career, status, authority, public life
11th	Labha	Gains, income, friends, elder siblings, wishes
12th	Vyaya	Expenses, loss, foreign lands, sleep, moksha

How houses are grouped

Kendras (angles): 1, 4, 7, 10. The pillars of the chart. Planets here are strong and visible.

Trikonas (trines): 1, 5, 9. The houses of fortune and dharma. The most auspicious group.

Dusthanas: 6, 8, 12. The difficult houses — illness, obstacles, loss. But they also cover service, research and liberation.

Upachayas: 3, 6, 10, 11. The houses of growth. Malefic planets like Saturn and Mars often do well here, because their results improve with time and effort.

Maraka: 2 and 7. Associated with the timing of health crises in old age; only read together with the rest of the chart.

When the lord of a kendra combines with the lord of a trikona, astrologers call it a Raja yoga — one of the most important combinations for success.

Reading a house

To read any house, an astrologer looks at:

The sign in it — its element and nature.
The planets in it — their strength, friendships and dignity.
Its lord — where the ruler of that sign has gone, and in what condition.
Aspects — which planets look at the house.
The karaka — the planet that naturally signifies that subject (Jupiter for children, Venus for marriage, Saturn for longevity, and so on).

That is why one planet can never tell the whole story.

A "bad" house is not a bad life

The 6th house is enemies and illness, but it is also the house of doctors, lawyers and anyone who wins through effort. The 8th is sudden change, but also research, astrology and inheritance. The 12th is expense, but also foreign settlement and spiritual life.

A planet in a dusthana changes the kind of experience, not whether life is good.
