The twelve rashis: ruler, element and nature of every sign

In Jyotish the zodiac is divided into twelve equal signs of 30 degrees each, measured against the fixed stars. Each rashi has a ruling graha, an element and a quality. Together these three explain most of what the tradition says about a sign.

The three building blocks

Element (tattva). Fire (agni), earth (prithvi), air (vayu) and water (jala), repeating in that order from Mesha.

Quality. Chara (movable) signs start things, sthira (fixed) signs keep them going, and dwiswabhava (dual) signs adapt. These also repeat in order.

Ruler (swami). The Sun and Moon rule one sign each; the other five visible planets rule two. Rahu and Ketu rule no sign in the classical scheme.

The signs, one by one

Mesha — Fire, movable, Mars. The pioneer: direct, brave, impatient. Starts ten things and loves the start best.

Vrishabha — Earth, fixed, Venus. Steady, sensual, loyal. Values comfort, food, music and savings; slow to change its mind.

Mithuna — Air, dual, Mercury. Curious, talkative, quick. Needs variety and conversation; can scatter its energy.

Karka — Water, movable, Moon. Caring, protective, moody. Home and family come first; memory is long.

Simha — Fire, fixed, Sun. Generous, proud, dignified. Wants to lead and to be respected; warm-hearted when it is.

Kanya — Earth, dual, Mercury. Precise, helpful, analytical. Notices every detail; can be its own harshest critic.

Tula — Air, movable, Venus. Fair, social, diplomatic. Seeks balance and beauty; finds it hard to decide.

Vrishchika — Water, fixed, Mars. Intense, private, determined. Feels deeply and does not forget; excellent at research and crisis.

Dhanu — Fire, dual, Jupiter. Optimistic, philosophical, frank. Loves learning, travel and teaching.

Makara — Earth, movable, Saturn. Practical, patient, ambitious. Builds slowly and lasts; takes duty seriously.

Kumbha — Air, fixed, Saturn. Independent, humane, unconventional. Thinks of the group and the long term.

Meena — Water, dual, Jupiter. Compassionate, imaginative, spiritual. Absorbs the moods of others; needs quiet.

Why your Vedic sign may differ

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The gap between them — the ayanamsa — is now about 24 degrees, so your Sun is usually in the sign before the one in the newspaper column.

Each graha has a sign where it is strongest (uchcha) and one where it is weakest (neecha), always opposite each other:
