मुख्य द्वार का वास्तु — कौन सी दिशा और स्थान शुभ

A south-facing house is not automatically bad. Vastu judges the entrance by its exact position along the wall, not just the direction. How the 32 entrance padas work, and simple fixes for a flat you cannot rebuild.
"We can't buy it, it's south-facing." It is one of the most common reasons families turn down a good home — and it rests on a misunderstanding of Vastu. The classical approach does not judge an entrance by direction alone.
The Vastu Purusha mandala
Vastu Shastra imagines the plot as a square grid — the Vastu Purusha mandala — with a deity presiding over each cell. The commonest grid is nine by nine. Around its edge are 32 cells — nine along each wall, with the corners shared — each with its own deity. These are the possible positions (padas) for the entrance.
Some padas along each wall are considered auspicious, some neutral and some to be avoided. So the question is not "which direction does my door face?" but "where along that wall is it?"
Favourable positions on each side
Divide the wall your door is on into nine equal parts, and count from the corner given below (the corner itself is part 1). The positions most commonly recommended:
North-facing wall (count from the north-west corner towards the north-east):
- the 3rd, 4th and 5th parts — Mukhya, Bhallata and Soma, the padas linked to wealth. Soma is identified with Kubera.
East-facing wall (count from the north-east corner towards the south-east):
- the 3rd and 4th parts — Jayanta and Indra, linked to success and recognition.
South-facing wall (count from the south-east corner towards the south-west):
- the 3rd and 4th parts — Vitatha and Grihakshata, considered acceptable to good.
West-facing wall (count from the south-west corner towards the north-west):
- the 3rd and 4th parts — Sugriva and Pushpadanta, linked to growth and prosperity.
Traditions and authors differ on the exact counting and names, so treat these as the common consensus rather than a single rule.
So is south-facing bad?
No. A south-facing door placed well along the wall is accepted by almost every Vastu text. What is widely avoided is an entrance in the south-west corner, the direction associated with Nirriti and stability — it is meant to be heavy and closed.
Practical guidelines for any door
- The main door should be the largest door in the house and open inwards, clockwise.
- Keep it well lit and clean; replace broken bells, handles and nameplates.
- Avoid a pillar, tree or electric pole directly in front of the door (dwar vedha).
- A threshold (dehri) is traditional; it marks the boundary between outside and inside.
- Do not place a toilet or a dustbin right next to or facing the entrance.
- A torana of mango leaves or marigolds, and a swastika or Om symbol, are traditional auspicious markers.
Fixes for a flat you cannot rebuild
Most people live in apartments where the door is where the builder put it. Common corrections:
- A brass or copper strip along the threshold.
- A Vastu pyramid or a pair of Ganesh images (one inside, one outside) for a difficult direction.
- For a south-west door: keep it closed when not in use, use a heavier door, and place a lead or brass plate at the threshold.
- Good lighting and a clean entrance, which every text agrees on.
These are symbolic corrections. They do not replace structural choices when you are building, but they are what the tradition offers for an existing home.
Moving in
Once the house is ready, the date of griha pravesh matters as much as the door. The shubh muhurat finder shows good dates and times for your city.
