विंशोत्तरी दशा — आपकी कुंडली की 120 वर्ष की घड़ी
यह लेख अंग्रेज़ी में है।
Why astrologers ask "which dasha are you running?" before anything else. How the Moon's nakshatra at birth sets the sequence, how long each planet's period lasts, and how antardashas refine it.
Two people can have almost the same chart and very different lives in the same year. The main reason, in Jyotish, is the dasha — the planetary period each person is running. The system most astrologers use is Vimshottari, from vimshottara, "one hundred and twenty".
The sequence and the years
Vimshottari assumes a full life of 120 years, divided among the nine grahas in a fixed order:
| Planet | Years |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 |
| Shukra (Venus) | 20 |
| Surya (Sun) | 6 |
| Chandra (Moon) | 10 |
| Mangal (Mars) | 7 |
| Rahu | 18 |
| Guru (Jupiter) | 16 |
| Shani (Saturn) | 19 |
| Budh (Mercury) | 17 |
| Total | 120 |
After Mercury the cycle returns to Ketu.
Where you start
Your starting dasha is fixed by the nakshatra of the Moon at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine planets, in the same order as above, repeating three times:
- Ashwini, Magha, Mula → Ketu
- Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha → Venus
- Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha → Sun
- Rohini, Hasta, Shravana → Moon
- Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta → Mars
- Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha → Rahu
- Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada → Jupiter
- Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada → Saturn
- Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati → Mercury
The balance at birth
You rarely start at the beginning of a dasha. If the Moon had already crossed 40% of its nakshatra when you were born, then 40% of that planet's dasha is treated as already gone.
Example: the Moon is 40% through Rohini (ruled by the Moon, 10 years). Four years of Moon dasha have "passed"; the baby is born with 6 years of Moon dasha left. Then come Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16) and so on.
This is why the birth time matters: the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so a couple of hours changes the balance by months.
Antardasha and pratyantar
Each dasha (mahadasha) is divided into nine antardashas (sub-periods), starting with the mahadasha lord itself and following the same order. Each antardasha's share is proportional to its planet's years.
For example, Saturn–Saturn lasts 19 × 19 ÷ 120 = about 3 years, while Saturn–Sun lasts 19 × 6 ÷ 120 = about 11 months.
Antardashas are split again into pratyantar dashas, lasting weeks to months, for fine timing.
How a dasha is read
A dasha gives the results of its planet as that planet stands in your chart: the houses it rules, the house it sits in, its strength, and the planets with it. The same Jupiter dasha can be a period of marriage and children for one person and of heavy expenses for another.
Astrologers then overlay transits — especially Saturn and Jupiter — onto the running dasha. When both point the same way, events are most likely.
Common questions
Is Rahu or Saturn dasha always bad? No. Both can be excellent if the planet is well placed for your Lagna. Many people rise fastest in a Rahu dasha.
Why does my app show different dates from my astrologer? Different ayanamsas (Lahiri, KP, Raman) and year lengths (a solar year of about 365.24 days, or a 360-day year) shift dates by days to months. Our tools use Lahiri and the solar year.
Your kundli shows the full Vimshottari timeline with the current mahadasha and antardasha, and the nakshatra finder tells you your birth star and its ruler.
