How this works

  • Each vrat is placed by the classical rule for it: Ekadashi, Purnima and Amavasya by the tithi at sunrise, Pradosh by the tithi in the evening after sunset, Sankashti Chaturthi by the tithi at moonrise and Masik Shivratri by the tithi at midnight.
  • Tithi times come from the Sun and Moon positions (Lahiri ayanamsa) for the city you choose, so they can differ by a day between cities.
  • Month names follow the amanta calendar used in most panchangs. Local and family traditions can differ; follow your purohit where they do.

Common questions

How often does Ekadashi come?

Twice a month — on the 11th tithi of the waxing (shukla) and the waning (krishna) fortnight. That makes about 24 Ekadashis a year, or 26 in a year with an adhik maas.

Why is the Ekadashi date sometimes different from another calendar?

Ekadashi is kept on the day the tithi is running at sunrise, and sunrise depends on the city. Vaishnava calendars also move the fast to the next day when Dashami is still running at arunodaya, about 96 minutes before sunrise.

When is Pradosh vrat kept?

On the Trayodashi (13th tithi) of each fortnight, on the day the tithi covers the evening Pradosh period after sunset, when Shiva is worshipped.

What is Sankashti Chaturthi?

A monthly Ganesha vrat on the Chaturthi of the waning fortnight. It is kept on the day the tithi is running at moonrise, and the fast is broken after sighting the Moon.
