Rahu Kaal moves every day and every city. A plain explanation of the calculation, why it is avoided, and how to use it without letting it run your life.
You will see Rahu Kaal printed in every panchang, often as "7:30 to 9:00". Those round numbers are a shortcut. The real calculation depends on when the sun rises and sets where you are.
The calculation
- Take the day's sunrise and sunset for your city.
- Divide the daylight into eight equal parts. In Delhi in June each part is about 1 hour 45 minutes; in December it is closer to 1 hour 18 minutes.
- Rahu Kaal is one of those eight parts, and which one depends on the weekday:

So on a Monday in Delhi when the sun rises at 7:13 am and sets at 5:35 pm, Rahu Kaal runs from 8:31 am to 9:49 am — not the "7:30 to 9:00" you may have seen.

Why it is avoided
Rahu is the north lunar node — a shadow graha associated with confusion, obsession and things that look better than they are. The tradition avoids beginning important things in Rahu Kaal: signing a contract, a griha pravesh, starting a journey, launching a business.
It does not mean the period is dangerous. Work already under way continues. Many temples even hold special Rahu Kaal poojas, especially to Durga on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Using it sensibly
- If you can choose when to start something important, choose a different window. It costs nothing.
- If you cannot, don't panic. Muhurat is one factor among many; intention and preparation matter more.
- For the bigger events — marriage, property, surgery — ask an astrologer for a proper muhurat that also looks at tithi, nakshatra and your own chart.
Yamaganda and Gulika, side by side
All three are one-eighth of the daylight. Using the same sunrise and sunset, the parts for each weekday are:

Yamaganda is avoided like Rahu Kaal. Gulika is treated differently: something begun in Gulika is said to repeat — so it is avoided for funerals and debts, but some families deliberately use it for buying gold or paying off a loan.
The same rule, a different city
On the same day, sunrise in Mumbai is anything from a few minutes (in December) to nearly 40 minutes (in June) later than in Delhi, and in Kolkata 30 minutes to an hour earlier. Rahu Kaal moves with it. A single printed table for "India" can be the best part of an hour off for someone in Guwahati.
At night
Many South Indian panchangs also give a night Rahu Kaal, dividing the time from sunset to the next sunrise into eight parts. It is less widely followed in the north.
Common questions
Is Rahu Kaal the same as Rahu dasha? No. Rahu Kaal is a daily period of about 90 minutes. Rahu dasha is an 18-year period in a person's life.
Should I avoid travel in Rahu Kaal? The tradition advises against starting a journey then. If your train leaves in Rahu Kaal, many people step out of the house a few minutes before it begins.
Does Rahu Kaal apply to online payments or orders? The tradition is about beginnings of importance. A routine purchase is not one.
