Common questions

What is a panchang?

The Hindu almanac. Its five limbs (pancha anga) are tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon’s lunar mansion), yoga and karana. Together they are used to choose times for vrat, puja and new beginnings.

What is Rahu Kaal and how is it calculated?

Rahu Kaal is one eighth of the daytime, from sunrise to sunset. Which eighth depends on the weekday. It lasts about an hour and a half and is avoided for starting new work. Because sunrise differs by city, so does Rahu Kaal.

What is Abhijit muhurat?

The eighth of the fifteen daytime muhurtas, centred on local noon. It is widely used for important starts, though by tradition not on Wednesdays.

Which choghadiya is good?

Day and night are each split into eight choghadiyas. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are considered good and Char is fine for travel; Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided for new work.
