What is a kundli?
A kundli (janam kundli, or birth chart) is a map of where the Sun, Moon, planets, Rahu and Ketu stood in the sidereal zodiac at the exact moment and place you were born. It is split into 12 houses, counted from the Lagna — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth.
What details do I need to make my kundli?
Your date, time and place of birth. The time fixes the Lagna and houses, which move on by one sign roughly every two hours. Without a birth time you still get every planet’s sign and nakshatra, but the chart is drawn from the Moon sign instead of the Lagna.
Which ayanamsa does this kundli use?
The Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the one adopted for India’s national calendar and used by most printed panchangs. Planet positions come from an astronomical ephemeris and are then converted to the sidereal zodiac.
What is the Vimshottari dasha?
A 120-year cycle of planetary periods (mahadashas). Where it starts depends on the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. The periods are Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17.
